WHAT IS A COMMUNITY CONTRA/BARN DANCE?
Community dance is enjoying a resurgence in the North America. It is common in the United Kingdom, where it is known as a “Barn Dance” or “Ceilidh.” Community dancing generally includes a variety of dances and formations during an evening, such as:
Circle (with or without partners)
Square
Longways (columns of partners facing each other)
Couple dances, including polkas, waltzes, schottisches, and a variety of folk and international dances.
Snaky lines or scattered formation
Participants can immediately have fun and feel successful at a community dance – there is no need for a beginner’s workshop because all dances are “entry level.” Everyone is welcome, regardless of age or how slow-moving they might be. Children and elderly are welcomed and included.
