Now is a great time to be a beginner! Please share this event with anybody who may be interested\, regardless of experience level! \n\n\n\nContra dancing has its roots in English country dancing\, and may feel familiar to square dancing. With Tory and Annie’s soaring fiddles and Rose’s driving guitar\, the trio brings a mix of classic New England contra tunes\, modern gems\, and original tunes to dance floors across the Northeast. Since meeting in the fall of 2024\, they have been playing as many dances as they can\, and they are excited to be embarking on their first big tour in November. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlbany Contradances are held every second and some fifth Fridays of the month\, September through June\, in the large ballroom of the Albany Elks Lodge\, located at 25 S Allen St\, Albany\, NY. \n\n\n\nDancing starts at 8pm\, with a beginner lesson at 7:45pm. Perley has a beautifully rich voice\, with the emotional power\, swing and improvisational feel of a true jazz singer. Sonny has very facile\, slightly percussive keyboard work and wonderfully interesting arrangements. Plus there’s a hot and swinging jazz rhythm section\, all key components of their crowd pleasing presentation. Music from the “Swing Era” and from the great American composers. DESCRIPTION:Contravention (Alan Thomson\, Eric Buddington\, Aldo Lavaggi) provides the music for caller Bob Isaacs and graduates of his calling workshops. \n\n\n\nThe workshops will be held Saturday afternoons: Oct 26\, Nov 2\, Nov 23\, and and Dec 7. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlbany Contradances are held every second and some fifth Fridays of the month\, September through June\, in the large ballroom of the Albany Elks Lodge\, located at 25 S Allen St\, Albany\, NY. \n\n\n\nDancing starts at 8pm\, with a beginner lesson at 7:45pm. Now is a great time to be a beginner! Please share this event with anybody who may be interested\, regardless of experience level! \n\n\n\nContra dancing has its roots in English country dancing\, and may feel familiar to square dancing.  Albany Contra uses the gender-free calling terms Larks and Robins. \n\n\n\nAs we’re living in a world with Covid-19: \n\n\n\n\nMasks are optional\n\n\n\nWe request that if you have symptoms or have recently been exposed to Covid\, please stay home.\n\n\n\n\nIn partnership with the DFO\, we would like to remind all attendees that consent is vital to a safe and inclusive dance experience. Be polite when asking for dances\, gracious if rejected\, and always ask before trying to dip\, lift\, or twirl your partner. I began traveling to any dance event I could find to take workshops and social dance. In the past year I’ve been attending events everywhere from North Carolina to Montréal and everywhere in between. He performs regularly with the Useless Cans\, Hot Club of Saratoga\, The Giroux Brothers and Bryan Brundige and his Piggly Wigglies as well as freelancing with various regional groups. He has most recently had the pleasure of playing alongside Stephane Wrembel\, John Ellis\, Bobby Militello\, and others on the stage at Saratoga Springs’ fabled venue\, Caffe Lena. In addition to performing\, he also enjoys arranging and writing for his eleven piece band\, the Dylan Perrillo Orchestra and his Quartet.  Don’t miss the Shim Sham and Snow Ball dances at the break. \n\n\n\n\n\nMay 3 – Kip Beacco & The Lucky 5\, a hard-swinging jazz band that blends swing and gypsy jazz to create a unique\, foot-stomping blend of music that appeals to a wide range of music lovers. The Lucky 5 performs both original compositions as well as putting a new spin on old jazz standards. The band is composed of highly seasoned touring musicians. The Lucky 5 brings verve\, high energy\, and an unpredictable impulse to the tradition of jazz from the 20’s\, 30’s and 40’s\, grooving deeply\, and keeping feet moving on the dance floor. No partner needed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJune 7 – Joshua Fialkoff and the Odd Fellows –Joshua Fialkoff lends his smoky voice and unique piano stylings – a veritable gumbo of “roots piano” flavors – to dance exchanges and series around the world\, and has been doing so for over fifteen years. Joshua first began playing for dancers as a bass player for Solomon Douglas. Later\, as a pianist\, he started his own group and began sharing his distinct brand of Blues and Swing. Now is a great time to be a beginner! Please share this event with anybody who may be interested\, regardless of experience level! \n\n\n\nContra dancing has its roots in English country dancing\, and may feel familiar to square dancing. \n\n\n\nAs we’re living in a world with covid-19\, we will have a number of precautionary measures in place: \n\n\n\n\nFor our fall dances (Sept-November) we are moving to a new\, more flexible covid policy. As long as the level of hospital admissions in Albany and Rensselaer counties is low or medium on the Monday before the dance\, we require all participants to either: \n\nWear a mask\, or \n\n\n\nShow proof of vaccination\, or \n\n\n\nShow proof of a negative rapid test\, taken the same day as the dance. \n\n\n\nParticipants only need to fulfill one of these requirements. The exception is if one of the counties shows a high level of hospital admissions on the Monday before a dance\, then all participants will be required to wear masks for that dance. \n\n\n\n\n\nMasks will be required for all dances December through February.\n\n\n\nWe request that if you have symptoms\, please stay home.\n\n\n\n\nIn partnership with the DFO\, we would like to remind all attendees that consent is vital to a safe and inclusive dance experience. Be polite when asking for dances\, gracious if rejected\, and always ask before trying to dip\, lift\, or twirl your partner. If someone at the dance causes you to feel uncomfortable\, please speak with an organizer or Safer Spaces Ambassador\, who will be wearing a button.
