SUMMARY:ZOOM ONLY - 2022 Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:  \n5/20 Update: Due to severe weather predicted for Sunday afternoon\, the Annual Meeting will now take place ONLY ON ZOOM. Members will receive a zoom link by email. We will reschedule the in-person get-together for another date over the summer. \n\nThe DanceFlurry Organization Board of Directors will hold an outdoor\, in-person Annual Meeting / “Reunion” gathering on Sunday\, May 22\, 2022\, from 2-4 PM.  Hear about what the DFO has been working on\, see your dance and music friends in real 3-D\, and maybe enjoy a little music.   \n\n\n\nWe also hope to offer participation in the meeting via Zoom. If you would like to attend online\, please vote in advance of the meeting using one of the methods described below. It will also be helpful if you could let us know you will be attending online by emailing dfoadmin@danceflurry.org. \n\n\n\n  \nThe event will be held outdoors (or under shelter) at the Shaker Heritage Society site\, near the Albany Airport.  Bring your lawn chair\, instruments for a little jamming after the short meeting\, and a dessert or snack to share (or your own dessert/snack if preferred) —  beverages will be provided. The slate of nominations follows the agenda and Covid procedures below. \nThe Shaker Heritage site is adjacent to the Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve.  You might plan time before or after the meeting for a nice walk around the pond or a picnic.  A brief tour of the Shaker site will be offered at 1:30 pm. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nDANCEFLURRY ORGANIZATION ANNUAL MEETING AGENDA \n\n\n\nSunday May 22\, 2022\, 2:00 PMShaker Heritage Society | 25 Meeting House Road | Albany\, NY 12110 \n\n\n\nI.  2:00   (Re)Meet and Greet \n\n\n\nII. 2:15    Introductory Remarks and Review of 2021-2022 (Shira Love\, DFO President) \n\n\n\nIII.  2:30  Election of DanceFlurry Organization Board Members \n\n\n\nNote:  A brief tour of the Shaker site will be offered at 1:30. \n\n\n\n.   __________________________________________________________________________________ \n\n\n\nCovid Protocols for the Annual Meeting \n\n\n\nThe DanceFlurry Board has been staying informed and participating in national conversations with the dance community to determine best practices regarding the safety of our community.  The board has endorsed these Covid Policy Work Group procedures for this outdoor event: \n\n\n\n\nAll participants must bring documentation of full vaccination or contact us regarding a medical exemption at dfoadmin@danceflurry.org;\nContact information will be recorded along with the standard Annual Meeting sign-in;\nMasks are optional;\nIf you bring a snack or dessert to share\, please package it in a “Covid-friendly” manner to minimize handling;\nPlease do not attend the meeting if you have been exposed to anyone with Covid or are not feeling well yourself.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHANK YOU to our retiring board members:  Barbara Bemis\, who led the efforts to establish the Community Culture Committee which has been working for a number of years to build a welcoming and supportive atmosphere at our events; Rich Pisarri\, who was elected to the board as treasurer in 2010 and worked to improve budgeting and accounting procedures and who served as board liaison to the Flurry Festival; Peter Stix\, who for over 30 years has organized contra dance events including the Albany Contradances! series\, Contrafest\, and Adirondack Dance Weekend; and Sandy Waxgiser\, who has served as board liaison for many English County Dance series and fearlessly chaired the Nominations Committee for years.  We are a stronger organization because of the many years of wise counsel\, teamwork\, and general devotion they provided to the DanceFlurry Organization. (And they were also just a lot of fun to work with!) \n\n\n\nWe also say thank you and farewell to two Flurry Festival Managers.  Ian Hamelin began volunteering in 1999 with the Flurry Festival sound crew. He joined the Flurry Committee in 2005\, was hired as the Administrative Manager in 2008\, and later took on the role of Technical and then Finance and Admin/Finance Manager.  Josh Snitkoff volunteered at DFO events as sound crew for years and was elected to the Board in 2013.  He became Flurry Technical Manager in 2016 and has most recently served as the Administrative Manager.  It is an understatement to say that the last two years have been extraordinarily challenging for the Flurry Festival\, requiring a great amount of pivoting and innovation.  We appreciate not only Ian and Josh’s many years of work\, but the pivoting\, additional strategizing\, and innovation that was required from them and the entire Flurry Festival Committee for the successful 2021 virtual Dancing in the Cloud Festival.  Josh also helped plan the benefit event at Caffe Lena this February when a 2022 Festival was not feasible\, and Ian ran the sound.  \n\n\n\nDFO Board Members (2021-2022)Shira Love\, President                                     Will Anderson\, Vice PresidentNoel Kropf\, Treasurer                                   Marie Bruschi\, SecretaryBarbara Bemis               Ken Fisher                      Rinde Glick                     Cindee Herrick                                         Lauren KeeleyJordan Knicely               Kevin Musick                 Rich Pisarri                     Juliana Post-Good                                         Harvey RaufmanJessica Schatzel             Amanda Stickney          Peter Stix                        Sandy Waxgiser \n\n\n\nBoard Members\, EmeritusJen Brown\, Past President                           John Guay\, Past President                            Bill Matthiesen\, Past PresidentPat Melita\, Founding Member                    Paul Rosenberg\, Founding Member \n\n\n\nStaff (Contractual)Lisa Allendorph\, DFO Auditor; Jonathan Greene\, Flurry Festival Program Curator; Vonnie Estes\, DFO Constant Contact PR; Blair Davenport; Flurry Festival Marketing & Fundraising Manager; Kristoph DeMaria\, Flurry Festival Technical Manager; Jim Mead\, Flurry Festival Database Manager; Sue Mead\, Flurry Festival Admin. Through these topsy-turvy years\, she has worked to keep the organization structurally and financially sustainable\, support mission-related initiatives which keep our members and participants active and engaged\, and develop policy and protocols for the resumption of our more usual music and dance activities – which always seems to be right around the corner\, if not actually in sight!  \n\n\n\nWill Anderson\, Vice President  Will is a swing dancer and swing dance instructor who joined the board in 2019.  He served as Chair of the Outreach Committee\, helping to plan the online presentation by Kenneth Shipp on the “Revolutionary History of Blues\, Funk and Soul” and is now serving on the Finance Committee. \n\n\n\nCindee Herrick was elected to the board in 2019\, and is a contra dancer.  She has assisted with grant applications and is a member of the Outreach Committee. \n\n\n\nJuliana Post-Good enjoys a variety of dances\, including contra and International\, and was elected in 2019. She has served on the Community Culture Committee and is the board liaison to the Tri-City Folk Dancers\, Family\, and Community dances. \n\n\n\n\n\nDANCEFLURRY ORGANIZATION 2022 ANNUAL MEETING BALLOT \n\n\n\nDanceFlurry Organization members who have paid dues for the 2022 year are eligible to vote at the Annual Meeting. SUMMARY:Capital District Megaband
DESCRIPTION:Are you an intermediate to advanced musician\, ready to play up to dance speed\, and looking for a new direction and challenge?\nYou\, too\, can be part of the Megaband!\nLearn from one of the most highly-respected fiddlers in the northeast\, and hone your skills as a dance musician!\nThe Capital District Megaband is a community contra dance band based in Upstate New York and sponsored by the DanceFlurry Organization. The band consists of local amateur musicians interested in playing dance music for dancers. \nParticipating musicians are from all over the Capital region. Besides the fiddle\, guitar\, flute\, and keyboard\, any instrument that can play for dances is welcome. \nGeorge Wilson (Photo: Lawrence White) \nDirector / conductor George Wilson works with the group to focus on building repertoire and developing the nuances and groove necessary for good dance music. \nIntermediate level players and higher are encouraged to join. Those who play by ear and those who read music are both accommodated. The goal of the Megaband is to provide an opportunity for musicians to play in a dance band setting. There are no individual instrument lessons. Dues are collected to pay for expert instruction and leadership\, as well as rehearsal space. Our season begins in May with a rehearsal open to all.  Various performance dates at dances and community events are scheduled throughout the year. \nYou can download a flyer here.  For more information\, please contact megaband@danceflurry.org or call 862-400-7227

SUMMARY:DEWEY HALL YOUNG AT HEART SERIES: FAMILY DANCE AROUND THE WORLD
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, August 14\, 2021  (Rain date\, August 15th)\n10:00 AM  11:00 AM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n9:45am– Space opens\n10:00am– Music and Dancing begins\n\n\n\n\nDewey Hall Back Yard\nDewey Hall\, 91 Main Street\, Sheffield\, MA 01257 \nTickets: FREE (donations greatly appreciated)\, Reservations requested \nInformation: deweymemorialhall@gmail.com or 919-478-4335 \nClick here for current guidelines. \nDewey Hall’s “Young at Heart” series is family friendly and welcomes all ages. “Young at Heart” occurs weekly on Saturday mornings starting at 10am. The series will feature different art forms each week in an engaging light-hearted way. “Young at Heart” will take place outside at Dewey Hall. This event is funded in part by a grant from the DanceFlurry Organization. \nAbout Intergenerational Family Dance:  Come kick up your heels to live fiddle music.  Enjoy a tradition of community dancing and music handed down from generation to generation. We play music and get everyone involved – from ages 2 to 102 — especially those who have not danced before\, in easy-to-learn American barn dance favorites: circles\, squares\, contras (all modified for physical — not social — distancing)\, as well as a few international folk (French\, African\, Turkish\, Chinese\, Russian\, Israeli\, Polynesian\, Scandinavian\, Latin American\, and more) dances. \nThe toe-tapping music consists of reels\, jigs\, polkas\, hornpipes\, and waltzes.  While participation in the dancing is encouraged — and it’s hard to sit still — it’s fun to just listen to the music and watch too!

I am an active volunteer across a range of my interests. I am currently on the membership committee for my regional professional organization\, the North East Association for Institutional Research. I worked on the communications committee for the Celtic Cultural Alliance in Bethlehem\, PA from 2009-2011 after volunteering at their festival the Celtic Classic. When I lived in Scranton\, PA\, I served as a community representative for a farmer’s market\, and I served as Treasurer and then Vice President of the graduate student senate during graduate school.\nMy professional background falls within higher education administration and data analytics. I perform a variety of office and organizational tasks in addition to being adept with computers and spreadsheets. Though my skill set is general\, I am happy to contribute to the DFO and support the arts\, music\, and dance in the Capital Region. \n  \nNoel Kropf (Garrison\, NY)   Also nominated to serve as Treasurer \nMy family and I have attended the Flurry Festival since the early days. We are avid dancers\, singers\, and musicians in various genres. I volunteered as a Zoom moderator for this year’s virtual festival. \nI have varied non-profit Board experience and extensive computer\, IT\, plus experience with music\, sound and video tech. I have been Zoom moderating and sound tech for Zoom since March 2020. I have booked bands and caller and run sound for the Poughkeepsie Contra dance since 2018. My major volunteer experience in summary: \n1996-present        Sound & Volunteer Coordinator\, Zlatne Uste Golden Festival \n2015-present        IT manager\, East European Folklife Center\, Inc. \n2017-present        Crew\, Vice President of Ferry Sloops\, Inc. \n2018-present        Board Member\, Fabric of Life\, Inc. \n2018-present        Talent Booker & Sound Engineer\, Hudson Valley Community Dance Poughkeepsie Contra \n2019-present        Nominating Committee\, Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, Inc. \n2020-2021 Producer\, Zlatne Uste Golden Festival \n2015-2020 Secretary\, East European Folklife Center\, Inc. \n1996-2019 Treasurer\, Lake Celeste Association\, Inc. \nI am interested in serving as Treasurer and by extension the Board and Executive Committee. With care and diligence\, I hope to contribute existentially to the organization and its goals. \nI can commit to regular attendance and participation either in person or remotely\, and to ongoing engagement and prompt responses. \n  \nJessica Schatzel (Burlington Flats\, NY) \nThe DFO mission to connect and inspire through traditional music and dance is close to my heart\, and I would be honored to serve on the board and its committees\, to further that mission. \nI attended many events in the pre-COVID-19 past as a guest/donor\, including dances at the Buhrmaster Barn. I grew up heavily involved in Irish dance\, ballet\, and contra dances. I would love to be a part of helping maintain and grow community support and engagement in these activities.  I have seen firsthand the magic these events create; the friendships they generate\, and the lasting impact of the interaction with live music and dance; the physical and psychological benefits of engaging in dance for neuro-diverse populations\, and the creativity and open-mindedness generated by learning new dances and music from diverse cultures. \nThe organization’s continued focus on accessibility and diversity are very important to me\, and I can offer my professional skills in project management\, budget planning/oversight\, and diversity/equity/inclusion\, to further enhance the strength of the organization’s board.  I currently serve on the board of WSKG Public Media\, my local NPR/PBS broadcasting station. I have worked as a project manager and budget coordinator for multiple departments at Bassett Healthcare over the past decade\, serving a 9-county area of New York State. Since May 2017\, I have served as the Corporate Sponsorship Chair of the Otsego County Relay for Life (American Cancer Society)\, forming innovative community partnerships and coordinating/soliciting corporate donations toward Relay for Life programming. I also serve on the Otsego County Chamber of Commerce’s Fundraising Committee\, collaborating with local businesses and community organizations to promote the growth of local small business endeavors. \nIn review of the Board application materials\, I feel my skills and experience are most closely aligned with the roles defined in the Budget and Finance Committee\, Program Support Committee\, and Community Culture Committee. I am available for monthly meetings for both the board and committees\, as well as regular email engagement. \n Amanda Stickney  (Albany\, NY) \nPrio to Covid\, I went to swing\, blues\, and contra dances regularly at the Elks Lodge. I was a part of the Flurry Festival a few times as a volunteer and enjoyed that as well. I want to be able to make a difference in some issues that I see that are not necessarily getting addressed. I am especially interested in making sure that those with disabilities (such as myself) are acknowledged and given the chance to be greeted and be a part of the community of dancers.            Something like the Program Support or Community Culture committees would work very well for me. \nI am very focused on the organization of programs (in previous jobs) and how they are running\, and people being put into the mix. I am interested in the arts (MA in Museum Studies) and have been dancing since I was in high school. I’m very good with spreadsheets and relating the tasks that need to be done. I believe that many people don’t realize that dancing is one of the oldest forms of communications and that is something that needs to be addressed among groups of people in general. \nI am a very good public speaker (have spoken in multiple public forums) I get along with new people easily\, and I am able to listen and take in new information as well. This can help from all sides as I look into more of what needs to be done on both the side of the dancer\, and the side of the entrepreneur. I believe that this can make the program more valuable not just to those who are already dancing\, but to those who have health issues who might want to get out and meet new friends and find a safe place to be accepted. \nI manage my calendar so that obligations are immediately noted and time is set aside and can commit to allocating time for DFO board work. \n\nOnly DFO members can vote.  Here are both Word and pdf versions of the ballot which includes instructions on submission.  Ballots must be received by noon on May 24th.\n \nWord document:  DanceFlurry Organization Annual Meeting Ballot 2021\nPDF:   DanceFlurry Organization Annual Meeting Ballot 2021\n \nYou may also vote online by completing this form.\n \nThe Zoom link for the annual meeting will be emailed to members prior to the meeting. If you have not received the link by May 23 or have questions about your DFO membership\, please contact Lorraine.

SUMMARY:Dance with Peter\, Paul & George
DESCRIPTION:Family and Community Dances with Peter\, Paul and George\nco-presented with \n \n\nSaturday\, Sept. 12\n3:00 pm ET Family Dance\n4:00 pm ET Community Dance \nJoin the live Zoom event\, streaming from Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs \nSuggested donation: $5/person \nThanks to everyone who attended! To offer feedback about your virtual dance experience\, send an email to dfopublicity@danceflurry.org\n \n  \n3:00 pm ET Virtual Family Dance \nCome kick up your heels to live fiddle music. Enjoy a tradition of community dancing and music handed down from generation to generation. We play music and get everyone involved – from ages 2 to 102 — especially those who have not danced before\, in easy-to-learn American favorites as well as a few international folk (Chinese\, Israeli\, French\, African\, and more) dances. We will focus on dances which can be done alone or with a partner. \nThe toe-tapping music consists of reels\, jigs\, polkas\, hornpipes\, and waltzes. Besides fiddle\, instruments in the family dance includes banjo\, mandolin\, guitar\, ukulele\, While participation in the dancing is encouraged — and it’s hard to sit still — it’s fun to just listen to the music and watch too! \nThe Family Dance is a part of Caffe Lena’s “Little Folks Series” which is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. \n  \n4:00 pm ET Virtual Community Dance \nThe idea of Community Dance is simple — get a group of people together with some musicians and a “caller” to teach and lead the steps\, and dance the night away. It’s a grass roots activity and not an event that requires participants to be serious dancers. Because this is a virtual dance\, we will focus on dances that can be done alone or with a partner.  The repertoire most conducive for singles and two people are simple international folk dances. \n\nPeter Davis\, Paul Rosenberg and George Wilson lead elementary and high school daytime workshops and residencies in traditional community dance and music\, and play for family and community dance evenings. Their repertoire consists primarily of contra\, square and international folk dances accompanied by lively reels\, jigs\, polkas and waltzes. Their music and dances transform even the most adamant\, grimacing youngsters declaring “I will never dance” into smiling dance-lovers asking: “When is the next dance?” \nAlthough they have worked as a trio since 1994\, Peter and George have each been arts educators since the mid-1970’s. Peter plays guitar\, piano\, banjo\, clarinet\, mandolin\, pennywhistle and many other instruments. Paul plays recorder and teaches and calls dances from America and around the world. George plays fiddle\, banjo\, and guitar. \nPeter\, Paul & George have recorded two CD s – and written companion instruction books – called Peel the Banana and Dance the World Around\, which present a sequence of dances from school residencies\, family dances\, and community celebrations.
