Our group is particularly fond of dances from the Balkan countries (Bulgaria\, Macedonia\, former Yugoslav countries)\, Romania\, Greece Turkey\, Armenia\, Israel and many other countries. We mostly dance to recorded music\, but have live music events a few times a year. We welcome all ages and genders\, and no partner is necessary\, as most dances do not involve couples. \n\n\n\n\n1:15-2:00 / 2:00-2:45 Family Dance with Paul Rosenberg and Tamarack \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEnjoy a tradition of community dancing and music handed down from generation to generation! Circle dances\, squares\, line dances\, international folk dances\, and play-party singing games from around the world. The toe-tapping music consists of reels\, jigs\, polkas\, hornpipes\, and waltzes. While participation in the dancing is encouraged — and it’s hard to sit still — it’s fun to just listen to the music and watch too! \n\n\n\n3:00 – 6:00 Contra Dance\, with Will Mentor calling to River Road \n\n\n\nThere will be instruction for beginners at the start of the dance\, as well as a welcoming atmosphere to learn-as-you-go! \n\n\n\n\nWill Mentor is a contra and square dance caller from Northern Vermont known for his clear teaching\, upbeat wit\, and relaxed stage presence. He loves to choreograph evenings with a variety of dances and tempos that at times surprise and always delight\, all the while keeping intact his guiding principle as a caller: “It’s about the dancers!” \n\n\n\n\n\nRiver Road delivers beauty\, power\, and groove to contra dances with a highly revered mixture of contemporary and traditional tunes with strong influences from Quebecois\, New England\, & Maritime traditions\, featuring Sarah-Hadley Yakir on fiddle\, Kristen Planeaux on piano\, flute\, and accordion\, and Jesse Ball on mandolin\, guitar\, accordion\, and foot percussion. While they are geographically divided by the Connecticut river\, an aptly named River Road connects them to create an energy that is highly sought after in the contradance scene. \n\n\n\n\n6:45 – 7:30 Performance by the Saratoga High School Fiddle Club \n\n\n\n\nThe Saratoga Springs Fiddle Club is a High School club that learns Irish\, Scottish\, and French-Canadian music by ear. All students are welcome to play\, however the majority of them play string instruments. The club is lead by Mrs. Jessica LaBello\, a talented string teacher at the High School.  \n\n\n\nThe Fiddle Club has previously played at events like the Victorian Streetwalk and the Beekman Street Arts Fair\, as well as the Flurry Festival! They are also planning to play at the McKrells Christmas Concert at The Egg in Albany and to travel abroad to Scotland next year!  \n\n\n\n\n7:45 – 8:30 Swing Lesson with David Wolf \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid dances all types of Social Dancing\, but mainly specializes in American Standard Ballroom and Argentine Tango. Dave has over 20 years of dance experience and has had training with some of the world’s best dancers. He is also no stranger to instruction\, for he has experience as a high school teacher as well as an instructor of college level courses. He has also trained dance instructors for over tens years. No matter where you take a class with David you are sure to enjoy every minute! David is known for his incredible sense of humor and extraordinary teaching skills. He is also filled with tons of dance history knowledge as well as strange factoids that surprise most everyone. \n\n\n\nBesides instruction and choreography\, Dave is a DJ. He offers a one of the largest authentic collection of Argentine Tangos\, Disco\, Swing and Latin music. He has done several ballroom events and weddings as well. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n8:30 – 11:15 Swing Dance with the Giacomo Smith Quartet \n\n\n\nGiacomo Smith – clarinet and sopranoGraham Tichy – banjo Bob Kendall – bassRandy Reinhart – trombone \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSince he moved to London a decade ago from Montreal Canada\, Saratogian Giacomo Smith has earned a reputation as one of the most distinct and versatile performers in London’s vital jazz scene. Smith\, along with cofounder Jack Abraham\, founded Kansas Smitty’s in 2013 as London’s answer to the fertile communities fostered in other cities by the likes of Count Basie\, Django Reinhardt and Duke Ellington. The idea was to grow a genre-blind philosophy that embraced all eras and geographies of jazz. Two years later\, they opened their first bar on Broadway Market in London’s trendy Borough of Hackney and played host to countless world class musicians: Louis Cole\, Cory Wong\, Johnny O’Neal\, Victor Goines\, Leroy Jones\, Shingai Shoniwa\, Eliza Doolittle\, Rhys Lewis\, Reuben James\, Ben Van Gelder\, Chris Dave\, and many others.   \n\n\n\nSmith is an active soloist\, performer and educator outside his role in Kansas Smitty’s. Notable appearances include performing Artie Shaw’s Clarinet Concerto with Guy Barker as a soloist at the Royal Albert Hall\, and with Wynton Marsalis at the Barbican Centre and in New York at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Smith has led Kansas Smitty’s in performances from London’s Alexandra Palace to international venues in Brussels\, Paris\, Baltimore\, New York City and Rochester. He has been a member of Rob Brydon’s touring band for “Songs and Stories” since 2019 and I worked with Jamie Cullum as a producer and arranger on his most recent release “The Pianoman at Christmas Pt. 2”. In November 2022\, Smith premiered Guy Barker’s clarinet concerto “The Art of the Hang” at the Cadogan Hall as part of the 2022 London Jazz Festival. Smiths also recently produced albums for actor\, Damian Lewis and drummer Jas Kayser (Jorja Smith).

SUMMARY:Albany Contradance
DESCRIPTION:Albany Contradances are held every second and fifth Friday of the month\, September through June\, in the large ballroom of the Albany Elks Lodge\, located at 25 S Allen St\, Albany\, NY. \n\n\n\nDancing starts at 8pm\, with a beginner lesson at 7:45pm. Now is a great time to be a beginner! Please share this event with anybody who may be interested\, regardless of experience level! \n\n\n\nContra dancing has its roots in English country dancing\, and may feel familiar to square dancing. \n\n\n\nPre-register with this QR Code\n\n\n\nAs we’re living in a world with covid-19\, we will have a number of precautionary measures in place: \n\n\n\n\nWe will be requiring proof of vaccinations – you must have had at least one booster. You can either send us a picture of your card virtually (via the link above)\, or show it at the door.\n\n\n\nDancers are encouraged to pre-register in advance at this link. You only need to pre-register once for the series.\n\n\n\nAll dancers must wear high-quality masks while dancing and when nearby other people. Please bring your own N95\, KN95\, or equivalent. We will have a limited number of N95s for those who need them.\n\n\n\nPlease stay home if you have cold-like symptoms\, even if you think it’s “just allergies”.\n\n\n\nWe strongly recommend taking a rapid test before leaving home the day of the event and are grateful for your diligence around communal health!\n\n\n\n\nIn partnership with the DFO\, we would like to remind all attendees that consent is vital to a safe and inclusive dance experience. Be polite when asking for dances\, gracious if rejected\, and always ask before trying to dip\, lift\, or twirl your partner. If someone at the dance causes you to feel uncomfortable\, please speak with an organizer\, who will be wearing a name badge. More information can be found at https://www.danceflurry.org/about-us/culture-of-consent/ \n\n\n\nWe have decided to make our events more inclusive by asking our callers to use the gender neutral role terms Larks and Robins. Thank you for being a flexible\, loving community! \n\n\n\nIn our ever-continuing work to welcome more people to the dance floor\, we are implementing a sliding pay scale. Please plan to pay what you comfortably can\, from $8 for those that need extra communal support to $25 for those who are able to give our newly reborn dance a financial boost. \n\n\n\nIf you can volunteer your time before\, during\, or after the dance\, we would love to help you help us! Please fill out this form to share your availability and interest\, and we’ll be in touch. \n\n\n\nContact us with any questions at albanycontras@danceflurry.org \n\n\n\nWe are so excited to dance with you again! \n\n\n\nHere is a complete list of our planned dates for the coming season: \n\n\n\n\nSeptember 9 – Matthew Christian and Max Carmichael with Melanie Axel-Lute\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Liz Nelson with Kingfisher (Cecilia Vacanti & Jeff Kaufman)\n\n\n\nOctober 14 – Contravention (Alan Thomson\, Eric Buddington\, Aldo Lavaggi\, and Brian Melick)\n\n\n\nNovember 11 – Alan Thomson\, George Wilson\, and Josh Pisano\n\n\n\nDecember 9 – The Russet Trio (Aldo Lavaggi\, Peter Madsen\, Stuart Kenney) with caller Will Mentor\n\n\n\nJanuary 13\n\n\n\nJanuary 13\n\n\n\nFebruary 10\n\n\n\nMarch 10\n\n\n\nMarch 31\n\n\n\nApril 14\n\n\n\nMay 12\n\n\n\nJune 9\n\n\n\nJune 30

\n\n\n\nHere is a complete list of our planned dates for the coming season: \n\n\n\n\nSeptember 9 – Matthew Christian and Max Carmichael with Melanie Axel-Lute\n\n\n\nSeptember 30 – Liz Nelson with Kingfisher (Cecilia Vacanti & Jeff Kaufman)\n\n\n\nOctober 14 – Contravention (Alan Thomson\, Eric Buddington\, Aldo Lavaggi\, and Brian Melick)\n\n\n\nNovember 11 – Alan Thomson\, George Wilson\, and Josh Pisano with caller Joan Savitt\n\n\n\nDecember 9 – The Russet Trio (Aldo Lavaggi\, Peter Madsen\, Stuart Kenney) with caller Will Mentor\n\n\n\nJanuary 13\n\n\n\nFebruary 10\n\n\n\nMarch 10\n\n\n\nMarch 31\n\n\n\nApril 14\n\n\n\nMay 12\n\n\n\nJune 9\n\n\n\nJune 30

DESCRIPTION:Free Swing Dance Lesson followed by open dancing to the band.* 7-8pm – Free Swing Lesson by pro Jason Fenton. No partner needed.* 8-11pm – Dance to Mark Gamsjager and the Lustre Kings \n\n\n\nAlbany Elks\, 25 S Allen St\, Albany\, NY 12208 (1 block south of Rt. 20 Madison/Western)Spacious\, attractive A/C hall (plus 2 large fans) with large wooden dance floor. \n\n\n\nTO AVOID LONG LINES\, PRE-REGISTER for the dance now and UPLOAD YOUR VAX STATUS at:https://tinyurl.com/2p96hera \n\n\n\nFull Covid vaccinations plus at least one booster are required\, so please plan ahead. At this time\, the policy is to also require N95 or KN95 masks (we will have a limited supply). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– Mark Gamsjager and the Lustre Kings play rock and roll the right way. The powerhouse combo has wowed crowds at Manhattan’s Rodeo Bar\, Seattle’s Tractor Tavern and all points in-between\, performing over 150 dates annually and appearing regularly at major festivals. And they’ve done it with uncommon fervor\, commitment and flair. The Gretsch-toting Gamsjager draws from a deeper well than most roots rock acts\, giving his music a breadth and depth while still keeping the place hopping and the dance floor filled. \n\n\n\n“The Lustre Kings will introduce you to doo-wop and wild rock’n’roll\, and then bring you back to rockabilly.” Their music is a travelogue of great American rock and roll\, with tunes from legends like Gene Vincent and Ronnie Self\, as well as from Commander Cody’s Billy C. Farlow and the Los Straitjackets’ guitar strangler\, Eddie Angel. “While most bands seem to be content with just recreating the sound of classic records from years ago\, the Lustre Kings have captured the spirit of that era\, tapping into what made those records and artists so great in the first place.”Check out: http://www.lustrekings.com/ \n\n\n\nVolunteers: please contact me if you’d be interested in being on the Albany 1st Friday Swing Dance committee and helping with the dance. \n\n\n\n10/7/22: Mark Gamsjager and the Lustre Kings \n\n\n\n11/4/22 – Sonney & Perley Jive Five \n\n\n\nCOVID POLICY \n\n\n\nWe strongly encourage pre-registration of your Covid vaccination and booster status in this system. SUMMARY:ZOOM ONLY - 2022 Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:  \n5/20 Update: Due to severe weather predicted for Sunday afternoon\, the Annual Meeting will now take place ONLY ON ZOOM. Members will receive a zoom link by email. We will reschedule the in-person get-together for another date over the summer. \n\nThe DanceFlurry Organization Board of Directors will hold an outdoor\, in-person Annual Meeting / “Reunion” gathering on Sunday\, May 22\, 2022\, from 2-4 PM.  Hear about what the DFO has been working on\, see your dance and music friends in real 3-D\, and maybe enjoy a little music.   \n\n\n\nWe also hope to offer participation in the meeting via Zoom. If you would like to attend online\, please vote in advance of the meeting using one of the methods described below. It will also be helpful if you could let us know you will be attending online by emailing dfoadmin@danceflurry.org. \n\n\n\n  \nThe event will be held outdoors (or under shelter) at the Shaker Heritage Society site\, near the Albany Airport.  Bring your lawn chair\, instruments for a little jamming after the short meeting\, and a dessert or snack to share (or your own dessert/snack if preferred) —  beverages will be provided. The slate of nominations follows the agenda and Covid procedures below. \nThe Shaker Heritage site is adjacent to the Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve.  You might plan time before or after the meeting for a nice walk around the pond or a picnic.  A brief tour of the Shaker site will be offered at 1:30 pm. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nDANCEFLURRY ORGANIZATION ANNUAL MEETING AGENDA \n\n\n\nSunday May 22\, 2022\, 2:00 PMShaker Heritage Society | 25 Meeting House Road | Albany\, NY 12110 \n\n\n\nI.  2:00   (Re)Meet and Greet \n\n\n\nII. 2:15    Introductory Remarks and Review of 2021-2022 (Shira Love\, DFO President) \n\n\n\nIII.  2:30  Election of DanceFlurry Organization Board Members \n\n\n\nNote:  A brief tour of the Shaker site will be offered at 1:30. \n\n\n\n.   __________________________________________________________________________________ \n\n\n\nCovid Protocols for the Annual Meeting \n\n\n\nThe DanceFlurry Board has been staying informed and participating in national conversations with the dance community to determine best practices regarding the safety of our community.  The board has endorsed these Covid Policy Work Group procedures for this outdoor event: \n\n\n\n\nAll participants must bring documentation of full vaccination or contact us regarding a medical exemption at dfoadmin@danceflurry.org;\nContact information will be recorded along with the standard Annual Meeting sign-in;\nMasks are optional;\nIf you bring a snack or dessert to share\, please package it in a “Covid-friendly” manner to minimize handling;\nPlease do not attend the meeting if you have been exposed to anyone with Covid or are not feeling well yourself.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTHANK YOU to our retiring board members:  Barbara Bemis\, who led the efforts to establish the Community Culture Committee which has been working for a number of years to build a welcoming and supportive atmosphere at our events; Rich Pisarri\, who was elected to the board as treasurer in 2010 and worked to improve budgeting and accounting procedures and who served as board liaison to the Flurry Festival; Peter Stix\, who for over 30 years has organized contra dance events including the Albany Contradances! series\, Contrafest\, and Adirondack Dance Weekend; and Sandy Waxgiser\, who has served as board liaison for many English County Dance series and fearlessly chaired the Nominations Committee for years.  We are a stronger organization because of the many years of wise counsel\, teamwork\, and general devotion they provided to the DanceFlurry Organization. (And they were also just a lot of fun to work with!) \n\n\n\nWe also say thank you and farewell to two Flurry Festival Managers.  Ian Hamelin began volunteering in 1999 with the Flurry Festival sound crew. He joined the Flurry Committee in 2005\, was hired as the Administrative Manager in 2008\, and later took on the role of Technical and then Finance and Admin/Finance Manager.  Josh Snitkoff volunteered at DFO events as sound crew for years and was elected to the Board in 2013.  He became Flurry Technical Manager in 2016 and has most recently served as the Administrative Manager.  It is an understatement to say that the last two years have been extraordinarily challenging for the Flurry Festival\, requiring a great amount of pivoting and innovation.  We appreciate not only Ian and Josh’s many years of work\, but the pivoting\, additional strategizing\, and innovation that was required from them and the entire Flurry Festival Committee for the successful 2021 virtual Dancing in the Cloud Festival.  Josh also helped plan the benefit event at Caffe Lena this February when a 2022 Festival was not feasible\, and Ian ran the sound.  \n\n\n\nDFO Board Members (2021-2022)Shira Love\, President                                     Will Anderson\, Vice PresidentNoel Kropf\, Treasurer                                   Marie Bruschi\, SecretaryBarbara Bemis               Ken Fisher                      Rinde Glick                     Cindee Herrick                                         Lauren KeeleyJordan Knicely               Kevin Musick                 Rich Pisarri                     Juliana Post-Good                                         Harvey RaufmanJessica Schatzel             Amanda Stickney          Peter Stix                        Sandy Waxgiser \n\n\n\nBoard Members\, EmeritusJen Brown\, Past President                           John Guay\, Past President                            Bill Matthiesen\, Past PresidentPat Melita\, Founding Member                    Paul Rosenberg\, Founding Member \n\n\n\nStaff (Contractual)Lisa Allendorph\, DFO Auditor; Jonathan Greene\, Flurry Festival Program Curator; Vonnie Estes\, DFO Constant Contact PR; Blair Davenport; Flurry Festival Marketing & Fundraising Manager; Kristoph DeMaria\, Flurry Festival Technical Manager; Jim Mead\, Flurry Festival Database Manager; Sue Mead\, Flurry Festival Admin. Through these topsy-turvy years\, she has worked to keep the organization structurally and financially sustainable\, support mission-related initiatives which keep our members and participants active and engaged\, and develop policy and protocols for the resumption of our more usual music and dance activities – which always seems to be right around the corner\, if not actually in sight!  \n\n\n\nWill Anderson\, Vice President  Will is a swing dancer and swing dance instructor who joined the board in 2019.  He served as Chair of the Outreach Committee\, helping to plan the online presentation by Kenneth Shipp on the “Revolutionary History of Blues\, Funk and Soul” and is now serving on the Finance Committee. \n\n\n\nCindee Herrick was elected to the board in 2019\, and is a contra dancer.  She has assisted with grant applications and is a member of the Outreach Committee. \n\n\n\nJuliana Post-Good enjoys a variety of dances\, including contra and International\, and was elected in 2019.
