DESCRIPTION:Great live music from Planet Zydeco!   \n\n\n\nGreat fun–and no partner needed!Last dance for the 2024-2025 season \n\n\n\nLesson at 7:00 – Dance from 7:30-10:30\n\n\n\n\nWhat is the difference between Cajun and Zydeco???     \nZydeco and Cajun dancing follow similar rhythms\, born in the Bayou of Louisiana\, and notably feature an accordion and often a fiddle (or two)\, generally with a rhythm guitar and a bass guitar (or stand-up bass). Stationary dances like Zydeco (or swing dancing) are generally done in the center of the dance floor to allow traveling dances\, such as a Cajun two-step\, to be done around the outside oval of the floor. \n\n\n\nZydeco Revelators\n\n\n\nZydeco music generally includes the distinctive sound of a rub board\, or “frattoire” as it is called in French\, and usually there is also a drummer keeping a lively beat. Zydeco dancing tends to be more energetic\, with dancers tending to stay in one location while they dance.  The gentle percussive beat of the triangle\, or “p’tit fer” as it is known in French\, or just the bass\, often keeps the beat in Cajun music. Cajun music tends to tell a story\, with gentler dancing that travels around the perimeter of the dance floor\, such as waltzes and two-steps. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe lesson at the beginning of the dance covers the traditional Cajun dances: the Cajun Waltz\, One-Step\, and Two-Step.  All of these are traveling “Carousel” dances. Now is a great time to be a beginner! Contra dancing is the contemporary face of a living tradition; some of the dances are hundreds of years old\, some are recently composed. Some of the dances are hundreds of years old\, some are recently composed; all are good fun and a pleasurable occasion for meeting and interacting with people both new and familiar. \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome. New dancers and families with children are encouraged to arrive at 7:30 for an introductory lesson. DESCRIPTION:Great live music from The Red Aces Cajun Band!   \n\n\n\nGreat fun–and no partner needed! \n\n\n\nLesson at 7:00 – Dance from 7:30-10:30\n\n\n\n\nWhat is the difference between Cajun and Zydeco dances??? \n \n\n\n\nZydeco Revelators\n\n\n\nZydeco and Cajun dancing follow similar rhythms\, born in the Bayou of Louisiana\, and notably feature an accordion and often a fiddle (or two)\, generally with a rhythm guitar and a bass guitar (or stand-up bass). Stationary dances like Zydeco (or swing dancing) are generally done in the center of the dance floor to allow traveling dances\, such as a Cajun two-step\, to be done around the outside oval of the floor. \n\n\n\nZydeco music generally includes the distinctive sound of a rub board\, or “frattoire” as it is called in French\, and usually there is also a drummer keeping a lively beat. Zydeco dancing tends to be more energetic\, with dancers tending to stay in one location while they dance.  \n\n\n\nThe gentle percussive beat of the triangle\, or “p’tit fer” as it is known in French\, or just the bass\, often keeps the beat in Cajun music. Cajun music tends to tell a story\, with gentler dancing that travels around the perimeter of the dance floor\, such as waltzes and two-steps. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe lesson before the dance covers the traditional Cajun dances: the Cajun Waltz\, One-Step\, and Two-Step.  All of these are traveling “Carousel” dances. SUMMARY:Cajun / Zydeco Dances
DESCRIPTION:Great live music from Les Taiauts!   \n\n\n\nGreat fun–and no partner needed! \n\n\n\nLesson at 7:00 – Dance from 7:30-10:30\n\n\n\n\nWhat is the difference between Cajun and Zydeco??? \nZydeco and Cajun dancing follow similar rhythms\, born in the Bayou of Louisiana\, and notably feature an accordion and often a fiddle (or two)\, generally with a rhythm guitar and a bass guitar (or stand-up bass). Stationary dances like Zydeco (or swing dancing) are generally done in the center of the dance floor to allow traveling dances\, such as a Cajun two-step\, to be done around the outside oval of the floor. \n\n\n\nZydeco Revelators\n\n\n\nZydeco music generally includes the distinctive sound of a rub board\, or “frattoire” as it is called in French\, and usually there is also a drummer keeping a lively beat. Zydeco dancing tends to be more energetic\, with dancers tending to stay in one location while they dance.  The gentle percussive beat of the triangle\, or “p’tit fer” as it is known in French\, or just the bass\, often keeps the beat in Cajun music. Cajun music tends to tell a story\, with gentler dancing that travels around the perimeter of the dance floor\, such as waltzes and two-steps. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe lesson at the beginning of the dance covers the traditional Cajun dances: the Cajun Waltz\, One-Step\, and Two-Step.  All of these are traveling “Carousel” dances. SUMMARY:North Berkshire Community Dance
DESCRIPTION:North Berkshire Dances are held on the second Saturdays of the month from 7:30 to 10 PM in the community hall of the First Congregational Church\, 906 Main Street\, Williamstown\, MA. Dances include contras and squares all done to great live music.  The sessions are open to beginners\, families\, and life-long dancers!   All dances are taught and no partner is required. Come alone or bring a friend or two. \n\n\n\nAs a community dance in a small college town\, we welcome people of all ages and backgrounds into the ever-changing tradition of New England contra dance.  Contra dancing is the contemporary face of a living tradition; some of the dances are hundreds of years old\, some are recently composed. Some of the dances are hundreds of years old\, some are recently composed; all are good fun and a pleasurable occasion for meeting and interacting with people both new and familiar. \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome. New dancers and families with children are encouraged to arrive at 7:30 for an introductory lesson. Come with or without a partner; most people change partners for each dance throughout the evening. \n\n\n\nThe dances run 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. on the second Saturday (most months) in the Community Hall of the First Congregational Church\, 906 Main St.\, Williamstown. DESCRIPTION: Sonny & Perley Jive Five \n\n\n\nOne of swing dancers’ favorite bands\, the Jive Five features keyboardist Sonny Daye and vocalist Perley Rousseau. Perley has a beautifully rich voice\, with the emotional power\, swing and improvisational feel of a true jazz singer. Sonny has very facile\, slightly percussive keyboard work and wonderfully interesting arrangements. Plus there’s a hot and swinging jazz rhythm section\, all key components of their crowd pleasing presentation. Music from the “Swing Era” and from the great American composers. DESCRIPTION:Monday nights 6-6:45pm African Drumming class\, 6:45-7:30pm African Dance classAt the Albany Barn\, 56 Second St. Albany\, NY Admission is a per-class sliding-scale donation (students usually pay $10-$20).Enjoy traditional music and dance from Guinea\, Senegal\, and the African Diaspora. Open level youth to adult classes. No experience needed and a limited number of drums are available on site.
